What about Dot US?  Dot US is the United States Official Extension.  Once reserved for municipalities, etc., it was opened to United States Citizens and those with a US business nexus about six years ago.  It is comparable to .UK (United Kingdom) or .DE (Germany).  It may not be the domain of choice for international businesses (who will want a dot com or net) but it's a perfect choice for professions within the US, government or country-related sites (Apr15.us) and family or small business sites.  Dot US is memorable and the domains are increasing in value, if not as fast as the top three extensions.
